The 18th Annual North Olympic Fiber Arts Festival continues including the fiber arts exhibition “Spinning Sewn Stories – Promulgate, Piece, & Ply” at the Sequim Museum & Arts at 544 N Sequim Avenue October 6 through November 25, 2023.

During the First Friday Art Walk Sequim reception from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, many fiber artists and fiber arts advocates will be demonstrating their passion and artistry. The 2023 fiber arts exhibition artists include Lora Armstrong, Lynn Baritelle, Renne Emiko Brock, Sam Chonko, Liisa Fagerlund, Cary Bryer Fallert-Gentry, MarySue French, Lynn Gilles, Jennifer Harris, Estelle Jackson, Debra E. Olson, Sharle Osborne, Marla Varner, and Jean Wyatt.

“Spinning Sewn Stories – Promulgate, Piece, & Ply” is a juried fiber arts exhibition that includes the creative and pluck feats of artistic declarations that persevere over challenges and leap beyond barriers to be produced and shared. These crafty and cunning creations tempt fate and fortune to be made and demonstrate how the artist will not be deterred and knows no limits. Fiber artworks of reinforced tales and yarns are spun from momentous consequences, family ties, and patched experiences. The choices artists make, the colors, patterns, topics, and materials, are part of the destiny they design for themselves while outwardly influencing hearts and minds asserting their unique artistic message and championing imaginative expression.

Deadline September 16, 2023. Enter a maximum of two art entries per artist; there is a $15 entry fee per artist. All formats of fiber art will be considered, including wall-hung, free-standing or pedestal mounted. Entries must be original and must not be copied, derivatives or based on other copyrighted or published work. All skill levels are welcome.

Sequim Home Town Holidays at Centennial Place on the corner of Sequim Ave and Washington St. Each year Santa comes to downtown Sequim via horse-drawn carriage, historic tractor, or antique fire truck! Families can have their pictures taken with the man in red!

The festivities also mark “Small Business Saturday” and the local merchants will be enticing you to their shops to find all sorts of great gifts, stocking stuffers, hold raffles/contests as well as offer some refreshments! The evening will culminate in a tree-lighting ceremony where you can enter the “number of lights” contest where you might win a gift certificate to spend at a local business that night! Immediately after, there will be a lighted tractor parade organized by the Sequim Museum & Arts.

On Saturday, October 2 from 11: 00 AM to 4:00 PM, we have an action-packed Fiber Arts Extravaganza full of free educational demonstrations, hands-on engagement for all ages, and Fiber Arts Market. The Fiber Arts Extravaganza inside the Sequim Museum & Arts at 544 N Sequim Avenue, Sequim WA. Visitors will have the opportunity to shop for items from fleece to finished products including apparel, household goods, and supplies to create your own fiber works. Demonstrations vary from spinning yarn, felting, knitting, hooking, weaving, and hand stitching. Learn more about local artists and fiber related groups to join our growing and supportive community. Also on Saturday at the museum, engage directly with the artists of the “Bumblebunching – Warped, Twisted, & Imperfect” exhibition to learn about what inspires them and how they create their art at the “Meet the Makers” Fiber Arts Reception throughout the afternoon. Bring your friends and family to discover the many forms of fiber arts and make some new friends too.

2021 – Bumblebunching – Warped, Twisted, & Imperfect

A juried fiber arts exhibition celebrating happy accidents, successful satisfaction in Wabi-Sabi, and unintended artistic experiences that often lead to evolutionary forms of expression and joyful acceptance that experimentation is part of one’s art practice.

Fiber Artists yearn for thorough planning and tight intention, gratification in challenging practice, and ritual appreciation and amusement in transience and incomplete mistakes. Bumblebunching are the exuberant jumbled loops created by the bobbin when stitching has improper tension while machine sewing.

Seasoned or newer creations are welcome. Open to all fiber arts media.

“At the Junction” (72″ x 69″)

At the Junction is an original design composed of blocks made using freehand cutting techniques. Creating the flow of color with special attention to value provided an intriguing design challenge. Dense quilting lines in graduated colors create texture while allowing the piecing to take center stage. Improvisation provides endless decisions at every junction of the process!

“For the Love of Squircles” (73″ x 63″)

Inspired by my first squircle quilt, this second version uses solid scraps and continues the process of creating a block a day for a year.  I once again joined a group of online quilters making daily circle blocks. I cut my shapes freehand and applied them using needle turn appliqué. The resulting squircle blocks created an opportunity to explore transitions and provided the perfect canvas for hand quilting.

The North Olympic Fiber Arts Festival includes a Port Angeles Fiber Arts Exhibition in September at Studio Bob’s at 118 ½ E Front St. on Saturday, September 14, 5 – 8 PM, Sunday, Sept 15, 12 – 3 PM, and Sept 21, 12 – 4 PM for Arts and Draughts Festival. This exhibition is filled with local fiber artists sponsored by Cabled Fiber & Yarn and the festival. Artists will be on hand to discuss their work and share their creative process.
